Keep the Door Locked Nightmare Event
A dark hallway that drains sanity until you reach the lights.
Nightmare is a race, not a puzzle
The Nightmare event drops you into a dark corridor without a polite loading screen. Sanity falls the whole time you stay there. Walkthroughs agree on the response: move toward the lights as fast as you can. Do not map every side room. Do not stop to inspect props. The corridor is designed to punish curiosity the same way a Door Breaker knock punishes a slow menu.
This is not the Dream Room badge state. Dream Room is a later-sleep scene with several doors (players often pick the middle door and leave). Nightmare has no “correct door quiz.” It has an exit you reach by running at the lit end of the hall.
What you should do before it starts
You cannot schedule Nightmare. You can arrive prepared:
- Keep sanity off the floor with pizza, legal sleep, and the Sanity Guide habits.
- Buy walkspeed on Shop Upgrades if cash is sitting unused. Default speed can still finish the run when you enter healthy; upgraded speed forgives a late start.
- Do not open Shop, Codes, or the badge list after the corridor appears.
If you entered Nightmare already near zero sanity, you have almost no exploration budget. Sprint.
Inside the corridor
- Orient toward the brightest light, not the loudest sound.
- Hold a straight line. Strafing into dark alcoves costs sanity you cannot refund in here.
- Use the flashlight only if it helps you see the exit path. Waving it at walls is wasted time.
- When you reach the lit threshold, take it. Do not turn around for a second look.
The Darkness anomaly also uses a void-and-light idea. Nightmare is the event version that can interrupt a normal night without that visitor’s tell. If you are unsure which one you are in, the rule is identical: light is the exit.
After you escape
Check sanity immediately. Eat leftover pizza if you have it. Do not sleep alone — Bathroom Monster still applies. Scan window, toilet, and cameras before the next knock. A Nightmare escape is not a free pass to accept the next visitor.
If the room still feels wrong, stop researching endings for that night. Survive 10 Days rewards a boring recovery more than a stacked Blood Moon attempt on empty sanity.
How Nightmare relates to other systems
- Shop walkspeed shortens the drain window. Flashlight helps you see the lights sooner. Sanity purchases raise the starting buffer.
- Codes do not skip Nightmare.
ENDING5andNEWUISOONonly add cash or tokens. Redeem them on Codes between nights. - Ending routes can still be interrupted. A grandma-key or katana night that hits Nightmare should drop the secret and survive first. Compare routes on All Endings.
- Hotel events such as power outages also send you into dark halls, but those halls have a breaker under the stairs. Nightmare has lights to run toward, not a switch to find. See Hotel Events.
What not to invent
This wiki will not invent a Nightmare spawn day, a guaranteed item that disables the event, or a hidden door that awards a badge. No official badge is named “Nightmare.” The Losing It badge only proves sanity can hit zero. If a video claims a paid skip or an executor “auto-escape,” ignore it — Scripts explains the account risk.
Treat Nightmare as a stress test of habits you already need: keep a buffer, buy movement if you can, and stop sightseeing when the meter is moving. Finish the lights, then lock the door again.
If a friend describes a “red hallway” or a “blood moon tunnel,” do not assume it is Nightmare. Blood Moon is Ending 5 and has its own page. Nightmare is the unlit corridor with a bright exit. Label the two events separately in your notes so the next run stays honest.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers about the hotel room, visitors, and endings.
How do I survive the Nightmare event?
Run toward the lights immediately. Sanity drains the whole time. Do not explore side rooms.
Is Nightmare the same as Dream Room?
No. Dream Room is a multi-door sleep scene tied to a badge. Nightmare is a dark corridor with a light at the end.
Does walkspeed help in Nightmare?
Yes. Shop walkspeed shortens the drain. You can still escape at default speed if sanity was healthy when the event started.
Can codes skip Nightmare?
No. Codes only grant cash or tokens. They do not disable hotel events.
What should I do after escaping?
Restore sanity with pizza or safe sleep, scan the room, and return to camera checks before the next knock.
